BloggingBlogging for Business

Nearly 40% of US companies use blogs for marketing purposes. Companies that blog have 55% more website visitors.

The facts speak for themselves. Marketing data clearly shows that blogging is a critical piece of the inbound marketing methodology and directly correlates to better business results.

We will teach you the key tactics for business blogging and how to use it effectively to drive more traffic, leads, and customers for your business.

Basic steps to starting your blog

Publishing blog posts and engaging with people who subscribe to your blog via RSS and social media is a great way to establish yourself and your company as industry leaders.

1. Plan the general editorial direction of your blog

Give yourself some general guidelines for the type of content you'll post on your company's blog. While these guidelines are likely to evolve over time, it's important to create an overarching concept for your blog from the start. It may seem counterintuitive, but placing constraints on your blogging content will force you to be more creative and will help eliminate the overwhelming nature of total creative freedom. Setting limits will set you free.

Here are some examples of possible constraints to get you started:

  • Ask your sales team what the most frequently asked questions are in your sales process and set out to answer them on your blog.
  • Answer the questions your marketing team fields most frequently.
  • Write about what you wish people knew about your industry, especially if there are some commonly held myths that you can bust.
  • Discuss current events in your industry that your company has a viewpoint on.

2. Configure your blog

After you've decided on your general content direction, you'll want to configure it before you start publishing your blog posts.

3. Find topics

After you've configured your blog and decided on a general starting point for your content, it's time to come up with topics to write some posts.

Here are some tips on how to structure the content of your posts:

1. Use lists to organize your thoughts and format your posts.

2. Take a stand against or in favor of an industry trend or convention

3. Write about some data or research that your company is privy to

4. Interview prominent people in your field and publish an edited transcript on your blog.

5. Mix it up. Write a list post backed up with data. Interview someone about their controversial stance on an industry practice.

4. Maintain a good balance of creativity and habit

It can be a struggle to get start writing if it's not already a habit. Don't overthink! Start taking note of great topics that you come across or that cross your mind at unlikely times. Then start forming the habit of writing creativitely.

5. Commit to a blogging goal

It's also a good idea to commit yourself to a basic blogging schedule -- say, two days a week -- so that it becomes even easier for you to form the habit and see the results that blogging regularly can have on your business. You might want to start with several times a month and work up to several times a week. The more often you post quality content, the more you will see your blog grow and influence your business.

6. Engage with your audience

After you have started to write and publish new posts regularly, you'll want to promote your posts using social media and engage with any readers who comment or start a discussion on social media. Not only will these conversations nurture the relationships you have with your readers, but you will also find that they can help you decide what to write about next.
